Barbara Foley Denman

Barbara’s versatility of expression and the desire to explore various art forms has led this Kailua Village Artist member through music and dance, painting and into gourd decorating.

While music, her first love, was studied at New Mexico State University and the University of Texas, her move to Kailua-Kona and a workshop in watercolor launched her into a serious painting career.  Before her move, she spent several years designing ladies clothing for her own manufacturing business.  Many workshops and continued study have added acrylic and silk painting to her watercolor repertoire.

Barbara also grows, designs, carves and decorates ipu/gourds using the “umeke pawehe” method where the gourd is dyed from the inside out.  This is a very ancient method that has been rediscovered in the past few years.  Last year her gourd design won both the juror’s and people’s award at the Kona Coffee Art Festival show.  Her gourd designs as well as her paintings, feature the organic flora and fauna, as well as marine life of Hawaii.
