Copper Petroglyphs
We are sad to report that Frank Andrews passed away in May 2025. His long-time apprentice and godson Bleys Lee carries on Frank's legacy through his own designs, as well as some of Frank's, including copper Hawaiian petroglyphs. Unfortunately, Frank Andrews Studio and Fabrication has completely relocated to New Mexico. As Kailua Village Artists is a co-op committed to supporting artists living and working on the Big Island of Hawaii, we will not be acquiring additional pieces for display in our gallery.
That being said, we still do admire his work and respect his legacy.
Frank Andrews finds his inspiration in petroglyphs and copper.
Petroglyph scribe, researcher, and artist, Frank Andrews starts his process by visiting sites where ancient Hawaiians carved figures into lava rocks. He photographs, sketches, catalogs, and researches what the different pictographs means. According to Frank, not all ancient carvers were equal in artistic skill. Part of his field work is finding the most expressive carvings upon which to model his sculptures.
Back in his studio, Frank works to capture and preserve the character of a carving done by an unnamed artist several hundred years ago. His sculptures are made from hammered copper tubing, then welded with a copper alloy that reflects subtle iridescent colors, much like the natural stone of the original carving.
