March 2024 at the Gallery

Volume 15, Issue 3

Guest Artist Extravaganza

This month we are calling attention to seven of our seventeen artists. These are the "guest artists" who contribute to the art on display at our gallery, but do not participate in our day-to-day operations. Do not let the name deceive you; most of our "guest artists" have been part of KVA for a good number of years,  which means they have added more value to us from their studios rather than manning the floor.

After so many years of participation, none of our guest artist need any particular introduction. So rather than repeat what we've already disclosed about them, the focus will be on some of their newest works. We've recently had dozens of new additions to our inventory in anticipation of this month's guest artist extravaganza, so come in an browse, or call or email your interest(s) and one of us will assist.

And now, without further ado:

Editor's Note: If anyone has noticed that our monthly news has recently been including more detailed descriptions and prices for select pieces of art, that is an accurate observation. Given the mafia parking situation, we are trying to make it easier to contemplate selected artworks from beyond our gallery walls. Feel free to pursue an inquiry about anything of interest either via telephone, or via an email, or via the website.

Native Nēnē

Otherwise known as the Hawaiian Goose or in Latin, Branta Sandwicensis, the nēnē is endemic to Hawaii. It likely shares a common ancestor the migratory Canada Goose, but has been isolated in the Hawaiian Islands for long enough to have evolved into its own species with slightly longer legs and shorter interdigital webs.

The nēnē population diminished to fewer than 30 individuals in the 1950s. Through state and federal conservation programs and protections afforded by the Endangered Species Act, the Current population around 3,800. It is still the rarest goose in the entire world.

Bonded pairs mate for life. They nest on the ground. Goslings are born precocious (able to feed themselves), but stay with their parents for about a year.

Nene can live into their 30s and 40s.  Most nene sport a plastic colored leg band with 3 alphabet or numbers. If you are able to read these numbers with a binoculars or zoom lens (law says to maintain 60 feet of distance), you can look up when the bird was banded and previously sighted at nene.org.

Nene is the Hawaii State Bird.

Adorable And Lethal Pufferfish

So cute! Thanks to one of Tom Carey's underwater photographs, I recently got to study one up close. Close enough to notice the elastic texture of its skin (yes, these are fish without scales) that, when it feels threatened, allows it to fill the space under its skin with water and inflate to something ball shaped. Some pufferfish species even have spines earning them the moniker "porcupine fish." And if being inflated and spiny isn't enough of a deterrent to predators, pufferfish secrete a toxin -tetrodotoxin -  causes paralysis and death.

Indeed, although a relatively common fish in Hawaiian waters, it is illegal to serve pufferfish in restaurants because of its lethal nature. Called fugu, pufferfish is a culinary delicacy in Japan, though both sellers and chefs require special licenses to handle and prepare the fish. Properly prepared, fugu reportedly has a mild flavor and  produces tingly and slightly numbing sensations of the lips and mouth.

It seems the moral of the story is to look, admire, photograph, but respect the pufferfish - don't touch and don't eat!

Extraordinary Original Works Of Art

Eight Feet of Origami Dragon

Shannon Nakaya

Hand-dyed archival-grade polyethylene

You kind of need to see it to believe it. They take about 50 hours to complete. Long enough that most of them have a name before they leave my studio. "Flame" has been greeting guests and guarding our gallery for three years now. Before that she participated in several outdoor installations. She's kind of proof that these origami sculptures are indeed heirloom objet d'art. At this point, Flame is not for sale. But I will spawn a comparable dragon with custom color(s) and sculpting for $1500. Moreover, I recently figured out a way to pack and ship 8 feet of dragon to the continental US for $400.

Anuenue Naia

Stefanie Culbertson

Anyone familiar with Stefanie's work has seen this image. But now she is open to parting with the ORIGINAL painting in a koa wood frame.

12-1/2" height x 15-1/2" width

$ 777.
